Frequently asked questions

How long can Americans stay in Europe without a visa?+

US passport holders can stay up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across the Schengen area for tourism or business visits.

What is ETIAS and do I need it?+

ETIAS is an online travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors, expected to start in the last quarter of 2026 after the Entry/Exit System is fully running. Once live, it costs €20, is valid for three years or until your passport expires, and does not change the 90/180 rule.

Does the old bilateral agreement with Denmark or Poland give extra time?+

Some pre-Schengen bilateral visa waiver agreements still exist (for example with Denmark, Poland and others) and may allow extra time in that specific country. They are applied inconsistently at borders, so get written confirmation from the relevant embassy before relying on one.

Do I need travel insurance?+

Not for visa-free entry, but it is strongly recommended. US health plans and Medicare usually provide little or no cover abroad.

This calculator is an informational planning aid based on Regulation (EU) 2016/399. It is not legal advice. Border guards make the final decision on entry. Bilateral agreements, residence permits and national visas may change your position. See our methodology.
