Post-Brexit basics

Up to 90 days in any 180 across all 29 Schengen states combined. Days in Spain, France and Portugal all draw from the same allowance.

Second homes in Spain & France

Owning property gives no extra days. Long seasonal stays need a national visa: Spain's non-lucrative visa or France's long-stay visitor visa.

Ireland & the Common Travel Area

Ireland is outside Schengen. Days there never count, and British citizens can live and work in Ireland without restriction.

Passport validity rules

Passport issued under 10 years ago on the day you enter, and valid for 3+ months after your planned exit date. Check the issue date, not just expiry.

Frequently asked questions

Do UK citizens need a visa for Europe after Brexit?+

No visa is needed for short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area for tourism, visiting family, business meetings and similar purposes. Paid work generally requires a work permit.

I own a second home in Spain or France. Can I stay longer?+

Property ownership does not extend the 90/180 allowance. To stay longer you need a national long-stay visa, such as Spain's non-lucrative visa or France's visitor visa (VLS-TS visiteur).

Does Ireland count towards my 90 days?+

No. Ireland is outside Schengen and UK citizens can live and work there freely under the Common Travel Area.

What passport validity do I need?+

Your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before the day you enter, and be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area.

Do days spent in Bulgaria and Romania count?+

Yes. Both countries fully joined Schengen on 1 January 2025, so days there count towards your 90.
